Messebau in Germany: Stand Rules at the 4 Biggest Venues

•By Exhibition Stand Pro Team

Short answer: All four major German venues require stand materials to be at least flame-retardant to DIN 4102 B1, or the EN 13501-1 equivalent. All four also reserve ceiling suspensions for the venue or its approved partners. Where they differ is height and paperwork:

  • Hannover allows 6.50 m in most halls, with plans for stands over 100 m² due four weeks before set-up.
  • Frankfurt requires approval above 100 m² or 4.00 m, six weeks ahead.
  • Düsseldorf sets heights hall by hall (3–8 m) and needs two-storey plans six weeks ahead.
  • Munich uses a 3 m standard height and allows two-storey stands only in Halls A1–A6, B1–B6 and C1–C6.

Updated 26 September 2026. Every rule below comes from the venue operators’ own technical guidelines (“Technische Richtlinien”), listed under Sources. Individual trade fairs can set stricter rules in their own terms of participation, so check your show as well.

Messe Düsseldorf (MEDICA, interpack, EuroShop)

  • Heights (§4.3): set per hall. Examples: Hall 1: 8.00 m; Halls 3–5 and 9–14: 6.00 m; Hall 7a and Halls 8a/8b and 15–17: 8.00 m; Hall 7.0: 4.00 m; Halls 7.1/7.2: 3.00 m.
  • Approvals (§4.2): single-storey stands that follow the guidelines “do not require the submission of drawings”. An optional document check costs €105 plus VAT. Two-storey stands, cinemas, outdoor structures and special constructions need approval. Plans are due “six weeks before commencement of the construction”. Late submissions pay a 35% surcharge on the inspection fees.
  • Two-storey stands (§4.9):
    • At least 2.5 m clear height on the ground floor and the upper floor.
    • A 5.00 m safety distance between the two-storey structures of neighbouring stands.
    • Upper floors on “up to 50% of the area, although this must not exceed 300 m²”.
    • Sprinklers where the structure covers more than 30 m².
    • Back panels facing neighbours must be neutral white, grey or beige.
  • Fire (§4.4): decoration materials must be at least DIN 4102 B1. Polystyrene hard foam (Styropor), artificial plants, bamboo, reed, hay and straw are not permitted.
  • Power: only the organiser installs the main connections. Wiring inside the stand may be done by qualified electricians under VDE rules.

Messe Frankfurt (Light + Building, Automechanika)

  • When you need approval (§4.2): stands larger than 100 m², outdoor stands, mobile stands, two-storey stands and special constructions. Single-storey stands up to 100 m² and up to 4.00 m high need no planning documents.
  • Deadline (§4.2.1): “Fully dimensioned stand plans drawn to a suitable scale (e.g. 1:100) must be submitted in digital form (PDF) for approval by no later than six weeks before the start of set-up.”
  • Heights: the TR refers to a separate factsheet of construction heights per hall. According to it:
    • The basic height is 2.50 m. Above that, walls facing neighbours must have smooth, neutral backs.
    • Halls 11.0, 11.1, 12.0 and 12.1 allow 4.00 m for stands up to 30 m² and 8.00 m for larger stands.
    • Hall 10.0 is limited to 3.00 m.
    • “Two-storey structures cannot be built in Hall 5.0.”
  • Two-storey stands (§4.9): need the consent of Messe Frankfurt’s Technical Event Management, requested six weeks before set-up. Interior clear height must be at least 2.30 m. If 30 m² or more is covered by the upper storey, that area needs an automatic fire alarm system.
  • Fire (§4.4.1.1): all construction and decorative materials must be at least B1 under DIN 4102. Ceiling materials must also not drip when burning (EN 13501-1 C-s2,d0). Floor coverings must be Cfl-s1. Most thermoplastics, including polystyrene, are not allowed.
  • Build-up: stand building may usually start five calendar days before the event opens. Work can run 24 hours a day, but normally not after 15:00 on the final set-up day.

Deutsche Messe, Hannover (HANNOVER MESSE, EuroTier, IAA Transportation)

  • Height (§4.3): “The height of a stand and advertisement in a hall, including suspended objects, is not to exceed 6.50 m within the stand.” Hall 8 is limited to 6.00 m and Hall 18 to 4.00 m.
  • Plans (§4.2): single-storey stands up to 100 m² generally need no drawings. For larger stands, exhibitors “must submit stand design plans … at least four weeks before stand setup begins”.
  • Approval (§4.2/§4.2.1): “Approval is generally required for all multistoried stands”, as well as open-air structures, mobile stands, tents, containers and LED walls. Documents are due at least four weeks before set-up. Building-permit documents are due at least two weeks before. Structural calculations must be checked by a second, independent structural engineer.
  • Fire (§4.4.1.1): materials must meet “DIN 4102-1 B1 or EN 13501-1 C – s2, d0”. Polystyrene, bamboo, reeds, hay and straw are banned.
  • Build-up (§1.2): stands must be complete by 18:00 on the last set-up day. Suspensions may be installed only by Deutsche Messe’s approved service partners.

Messe München (bauma, electronica)

  • Height: “The standard height for stand structures and advertising hoardings is 3 m.” The maximum for each event is set in that event’s special terms. For example, bauma exempts hall stands from design review only if they stay within 3 m and under 100 m².
  • Approval: needed for stands over 100 m² or over 3 m, multi-storey stands, stands with bridges, stairs, galleries or cantilevered roofs, and outdoor structures over 50 m² or 5 m.
  • Two-storey stands: allowed only in Halls A1–A6, B1–B6 and C1–C6, with approval from the Munich fire department, the exhibition management and Technical Exhibitor Service. Messe München’s two-storey notice (July 2025) sets the deadline “at latest six weeks before stand set-up is due to begin”. The rules also cover:
    • clear height of at least 2.40 m on both floors;
    • sprinklers when the covered area exceeds 30 m², with one sprinkler per 12 m²;
    • stairs, cabins and terraces at least 3 m from neighbouring stands.
  • Fire: materials must be at least B1 under DIN 4102-1 or class C-s2,d0 under EN 13501-1, with a test certificate available on the stand.
  • Electrics and suspensions: connections from the utility ducts are fitted only by Messe München or its appointed contractors. Fixing points in the hall ceiling are “the exclusive responsibility of Messe München GmbH”.

What this means for your Messebau project

  1. Plan the height hall by hall. A design that works at 6.50 m in Hannover may be limited to 4.00 m in Düsseldorf Hall 7.0 or need approval above 3 m in Munich.
  2. Count back six weeks. Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Munich (for two-storey stands) all use a six-week deadline. With engineering and a second structural check, start double-deck design two to three months before build-up.
  3. Certify every material. Ask your builder for B1 or C-s2,d0 certificates before production. Polystyrene foam is banned in all four rulebooks.
  4. Budget for venue services. Suspension points and power connections are ordered from the venue. See our exhibition stand cost guide for 2026 prices.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum stand height at German trade fairs?

It depends on the venue and hall. The general limit is 6.50 m at Deutsche Messe Hannover. Messe Düsseldorf ranges from 3.00 m to 8.00 m by hall. Messe München uses a 3 m standard, with the event maximum set per show. Messe Frankfurt publishes a height factsheet per hall.

Do I need approval for a double-deck stand in Germany?

Yes, at all four venues. Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Munich set a six-week deadline before set-up. Hannover requires approval for all multi-storey stands, with documents at least four weeks before set-up.

Which fire class do stand materials need in Germany?

At least flame-retardant B1 under DIN 4102, or the EN 13501-1 equivalent (C-s2,d0 in the Hannover and Munich rules). Frankfurt asks for Cfl-s1 for floor coverings.

Can my stand builder hang a truss from the hall ceiling?

Not directly. All four venues reserve ceiling suspension points for themselves or their approved partners. Your builder supplies the rigging plan and the load data.
